Roblox, the well-liked online gaming and creation platform, has declared its support for California Senate Bill 933 (SB 933). This law aims to tackle the growing issue of AI-generated inappropriate and harmful images of children. Roblox is committed to building a safe, welcoming, and optimistic online space and views safeguarding children on the platform as extremely important.
Roblox acknowledges the great potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for creativity and safety improvements. However, it emphasizes that these powerful technologies must be used carefully and responsibly, as misuse can lead to real-world harm. It highlights a report from the Stanford Internet Observatory in 2023, which uncovered large amounts of explicit and abusive images of children hidden within popular AI image generators. This makes it disturbingly easy to create and distribute such content.
I never really considered how art generators could be used for malice. To be honest, it’s a scary thought. Since art generators for AI are so easy to use, a lot of images are going out, and there’s not much any company can do to police it. You’d have to pay tons of staff, and many of these generators are free, so how can they make sure they’re not being used with bad intentions?
Roblox has made it clear that certain content is not allowed on its platform. To enforce this, the company uses internal and external measures, including PhotoDNA, to stop this content from being uploaded or shared. The company also backs a wider legal ban on the possession and sharing of AI-generated explicit and abusive images of children.
“Such images should be prohibited more widely, which is why Roblox is pleased to stand alongside California law enforcement organizations and child safety advocates to support SB 933. We applaud Senator Aisha Wahab and the members of the Senate Public Safety Committee for their leadership on this legislation and the recognition that laws need to keep pace with the evolving technology landscape.”
Roblox supports Senator Aisha Wahab and the Senate Public Safety Committee for their work on SB 933. The company believes the bill clarifies the law and enhances protections in an ever-changing technological environment. Roblox supports this legislation alongside California law enforcement and child safety organizations.
This law, for those who don’t know, already covers CP, but this amendment is to make sure it also covers AI. It’s good to see a platform specifically for kids try and actively help kids.
